DJ Don Cannon’s Greatest Hits
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Once again, if it’s Friday at the Atlanta Music Scene blog, it must be time to to talk about Janet Ja no she’s not the topic today.
We’re picking up on the subject raised in the Music Insider column yesterday in Access Atlanta: DJ Don Cannon of Atlanta’s mixtape/record label power the Aphilliates.
Well, not only was he willing to let readers behind his turntables, but Cannon shared a bit of news - he’s releasing his first “greatest hits” mixtape, of sorts, of his own productions Jan. 22.
What singles do you think should be on it? How do you think he and fellow Aphilliate, DJ Drama, have fared since their big arrest on piracy charges last January? (The two still have yet to go to trial). And did the long-awaited release of DJ Drama’s first official CD have the impact you expected?

@ Big boom, so why don’t you go back to New York so you can listen to Funkmaster Flex as much as you want? On topic, I think both DJs have not let the piracy charges stop them. it’s funny how the recording industry wanted to prosecute these two for doing the very thing that was keeping the hip hop music industry alive. DJ Drama, Cannon - keep doing your thing!

this will never be the home of hip hop. NY has been doing it for so long its time to start teaching and passing on lessons. Its like a father teaching his son how to ride a bike. I mean any idiot can right a song about crank that!! and shake that!!! when we gonna here some real hip hop, with some type of message and not this juk joint hip hop.

“You country folk just out right stupid.”
I guess we can’t all be prolific geniuses like “Big Boom” with his masterful use of language. I mean, damn, he really put us stupid southerners in our place.
Keep clinging onto memories of when NYC was even relevant in the rap game.

This has nothing to do with a “greater” dj. Someone released a compilation…that’s it. Just because someone may consider Jay the greatest that ever did it, doesn’t mean you can never buy another artists album…..? Now that’s country as hell to have that first comment set that type of tone when the article wasn’t even aiming towards a “greater than” title for Don Cannon! And Atlanta is not the home of Hip-Hop, New York will always be. We have our own genre of music down here, and guess what, we built it…and it’s what’s been running the music industry for a few years now! Quit living in the past, I haven’t heard a peep out of NY artists in a minute. You NY’ers on this board sound as silly as you look when you walk on the beach with timbs. Get the hell on.

I’ve got love for NY and for the Dirty Dirty. It’s true that the South is runnin’ things right now other than Jay-Z no one is really sellin records in NY. The songs like Crank Dat and so on is for the kids. Remember that there is also good music in the south like the songs that Outkast has been puttin out, UGK has some quality music, T.I. and Jeezy are both hot as well. As far as the crunk songs go, there was that cat in NY who had the song Chicken Noodle Soup and MIMS is not far behind. Also, Fat Man Scoop is always chantin. So, there are different flavas of hip hop music on both the south end and East Coast NY end. Also, Lil Wayne is from the South and he is really killin it right now!

P,beat4life-Oh so you are a english teacher. Yes, the truth is very hard to bear sometimes. Listen, there is much music coming out of NY. They dont play it all down here. Listen no one has addressed my statement about when will a artist from The ATL will actually come out with some jam that has some sort of meaning. Drop science, knowledge talk about something to enrich the minds of the youth. Also remeber with a past there could not be a future. NY BIG UP!!!!!NY runs this hip hop thing 4life.Holla @ your boy!!!!

Don Cannon is on his way to becoming an even bigger success and he deserves it! He has worked extremely hard to get to where he is now and it’s paying off big time! He is definitely a major player in the music industry. His mixtape is going to be hot! If you don’t believe me just wait and see. Congrats Don and keep up the good work!

@ Big boom - so because I told the DJs to keep doing their thing, I’m dickriding? So by that account, you must dickride Funkmaster Flex, especially since the article doesn’t even mention him, correct? Just because you live in GA, certainly doesn’t require you to be a fan. By using the basic set of reading skills, you could have simply comprehended and answered the questions which were about Cannon and Drama. I love all hip-hop regardless of area and have enough intelligence not to segregate something I don’t even own. It’s hilarious that so many New Yorkers come here, scream they hate it, yet can’t go back to NY because all of the real New Yorkers ran them out. Don’t sweat it. We’ve got southern hospitality and glad you came down.

Big Boom- no, i’m not an english teacher. just think it’s funny you’re trying to call others stupid and can’t put a sentence together.
You want substance?- go listen to any of Outkast’s first 4 or 5 albums. Go cop Goodie Mob “still standing”.
That BS stream-of-conciousness backpack hip-hop NY garbage you’re referring to ain’t deep. Sorry.

Blog thugs? Please. I’m just having a conversation. Sorry if you feel threatened. I’ll try to tone down my words so you don’t feel scared. As for making it in the concrete jungle, apparently you couldn’t make it in NY either which is what brought you down here. Also, just to help you out a bit: Writing such lines as “You dudes is lames” shows that maybe you need to spend more time in English class instead of the AJC.com blogs.

“blog thugs”? “concrete jungle”? you really make me laugh, boom. i would say you’re just an internet loudmouth, but seeing that you’re from NY, i’m sure you can’t STFU in person either.
you’ve yet to give an example of this knowledge-filled science you NY cats be droppin, son. then you crap on Outkast and Goodie? i don’t care where you’re from, you’re a retard for saying that.
so here’s what you do: go back up north and ride that 50 or Puff Daddy or that Chicken Noodle Soup garbage or whatever’s hot to you losers. then you and your crew can sit around stroking each other about how NY started rap. nobody cares that your hometown (that you probably can’t afford to go back to)is where hip-hop started. spaghetti started in china- who give a sh*t?
that’s word, son. like whoa. you clown punk. love u boom

I’m looking foward to checking it out. Hopefully it will have a couple of new tracks. I was very satisfied with Drama’s album. There have only been like three comments that were actually about the post. Why do ya’ll fools love to get on these blogs and argue with each other? Plus, if we’re all such country bumpkins and our music sucks so bad, why do you live here?

I just need to know why both you North and South Dumbies are going back and forth about something that has nothing to do w/ the topic. ADHD The Topic is about Don Cannon and his release. FYI If ya’ll even “PAY ATTENTION” you would know that he reps HOT ARTIST. Get A P****** Grip Don’t nobody own no turf. Here today and gone tomorrow this s** ain’t ours. If you wanna rep something rep the hot s** you put out. How many of ya’ll contributed to the lyrics/beats????…WTF is ya age??? Hip Hop was created UP North however Some of the Artist in the South is Awesome and deserve there Credit. Puffy can’t really dis him that’s his artist (Joc)that got Tom Cruse dancing.lol Just give credit where Credits due.
I think it is great that Don has came far enough to do a greatest hit and I’ll be looking forward to buying it. I love it when someone advances from hard work and detication. Young Black Man on his Grind will get my support. Good Luck Cannon an awesome Producer and DJ I’m sure it’ll be well worth it. :)

BigBoom honey, do you see what your ignorant ass comment created? A board full of ignorance. From your comments, i’m gonna assume that you must be in your late 30’s, i imagine you to be one of these old school ny’ers who just can’t grow up & out of your era. Trade in the timbs & get out of the 80’s & 90’s, you sound silly.

It’s sad that cats from up top got to go back 10, 15 years to bring up their relevance in hip hop. It’s sad they can’t accept the changes and understand that their moment in the sun was just that, a moment. It’s no wonder they can’t keep an artist hot. They have so much built up hatred. They mad because they can’t get money anymore. So, they move and try to infiltrate other hot regions just to eat. When your hottest artist doesnt even call NY home, that speaks volumes. Plus, he even called you guys out! I RUN NEW YORK, I believe he spoke on his latest hit.
You guys are played out like Timbs and shorts. Like the words son and ugod! LOL!! Those always cracked me up! Its nice to see their energy though. Maybe if they stop hatin and start rapping, they could get another gold album. But in the meantime, IF YOU DON’T LIKE WHERE I STAY, THEN FLY AWAY! Maybe we can get some water back!!

NY people are so out of touch about music it’s ridiculous! Music in this country was born in the south, and still resides here. Hip Hop music was born from the music of James Brown, Ray Charles, Little Richard, who are all from GA, not NY. The best selling hip hop group of all time just happens to be Outkast, and I’m sure they are from where? Georgia

HIP HOP AINT DEAD BECAUSE THE SOUTH RUNNING THE GAME. IF NEW YORK RAPPERS WERE AS GOOD AS YALL SAY, WHY DONT THEY GET ANY AIR TIME ON BET, MTV, OR ON THE RADIO. NO ONE LISTENS TO THEM BECAUSE THEY AINT GOOD AS THEY USED TO BE. RAPPERS FROM NEW YORK ARE EVEN STARTING TO MESS WITH RAPPERS FROM THE SOUTH. BECAUSE THE SOUTH & THE WEST COAST IS RUNNING THE GAME. DEAL WITH IT
